Grandfield Elementary Football Festival

Wow!! I had a GREAT day today watching my two little ones participate in the Grandfield Elementary Football Festival. The tournament was in Tipton, Oklahoma and the kiddos were FANTASTIC! Here are some shots of my great day.....

BUILT NY Laptop Slip Covers

I seem to be traveling A LOT lately!!! I go to photography schools, conventions, and am out on-location with clients quite frequently. Traveling with my 17 inch lap-top is a vital part of my business but can be quite a pain as well. It seems to be getting scratched, dinged, and banged around more often than I care for. I have a laptop bag now but am looking for something that will protect my investment a little more………..especially at the airport!

So I found these very cool laptop slip in covers. Their hour glass design stretches to a perfect fit with the machine and they even have shark gill grips. The material is made of a wetsuit grade neoprene and it is machine washable too!

Expodisc Vs. CBL

A photo friend of mine and I recently got together for lunch. She wanted to know why I thought that my CBL was better than her Expodisc.

Well…………………..The Expodisc is a circular plastic device that is put at the end of a lens to shoot a custom white balance.

I told her that I thought that my CBL was more “accurate” because of the simple idea that the light that falls on my subjects is not always the same as the light that is hitting my lens. You see, when I use my CBL as a custom white balance, I hold it in front of my subjects, and so my camera takes the reading from that area to create more accurate results.

If I choose to use my CBL as a color target for Camera RAW instead, then I STILL hold it in front of my subjects and still get accurate results every time.

The interesting thing is, that when I speak with other photographers at conventions, there seems to be plenty of shooters out there who really don’t know how to use the Expodisc correctly. The CBL is SO SUPER DUPER easy to use and has been fail proof for me every time!

Una amiga mía de fotografía y yo nos juntamos para almorzar recientemente. Ella quiso saber por qué yo pienso que mi CBL es más mejor que su Expodisc.

Pues…..el Expodisc es un dispositivo de plastico que se pone enfrente de su lente para tomar un “Custom White Balance”.

Le dije que creo que mi CBL es más exacto porque la luz que se cae en mis sujetos no es siempre el mismo como la luz que se cae en mi lente. Cuando uso mi CBL como un “Custom White Balance”, yo lo tengo delante de mis sujetos, y mi cámara toma la lectura de esa área para crear los resultados más exactos.

Si uso mi CBL como un objetivo de color para “Camara RAW”, pues entonces TODAVIA lo pongo delante de mis sujetos y todavia consigo los resultados exactos cada vez.

La cosa interesante es, cuando hablo con otros fotógrafos en convenciones, se me parece que muchos de ellos no saben como usar el Expodisc correctamente. ¡El CBL es TAN fácil para usar y nunca se ha fallado para mí!

Kool Kelsey

This is Kelsey and her baby Ariel! Kelsey was so FUN to photograph and is the SWEETEST girl!!!! She has the coolest parents too!!! I've never had parents come along for the session and pic-nic as we work! LOL! I liked this photograph of Kelsey very much because it portrays Kelsey's affection and was PERFECT for some of the new brushes that i picked up from Nancy Emmerich at East Coast School! Cheers!

What a TRIP!

Whew! Just got back from East Coast Schools in Raleigh, Durham on Saturday.
I had the honor of studying photography and photoshop with Don and Nancy Emmerich this year. They are from OK City and are some of the COOLEST and most talented artists in our industry! We learned everything from lighting, setting computer preferences, marketing, and of course............Photoshop techniques! I took some of my recent client images with me to apply some of the neat things that I learned.........Was doing GREAT........until I spilled soda on my laptop keyboard. BUSY WEEK! But Can't Wait to Go!

Whew!!! It has been a very hectic last two weeks! We've been trying to get the kids ready to go back to school and getting my classroom ready for instruction too!! I am sooo very much looking forward to meeting my new students and getting my own kiddos back to their routines as well! I can't wait to watch them play sports and dance this fall!

In the mean time, I've been busy with my baby model search and have been having a BLAST building my portfolio and getting ready for my 1st edition book and baby program campaign. I've also been busy with some senior and family sessions too! I am anxiously awaiting your proof books!

The reason I'ts so hectic isn't because of trying to get everything taken care of before school starts but is actually because I will be leaving for North Carolina this Saturday. Raleigh North Carolina houses one of the BEST Photography Schools in the country.....East Coast Schools! This will be my second year attending this school and CAN'T WAIT to get back there and see my old friends and learn some new photographic techniques!!!! I took an AMAZING lighting class and this is where I really learned and grasped the concept of "OFF CAMERA FLASH".

While my friend Paula and I were at Sandy Puc's Bellies & Babies seminar in OK City last Saturday, we had the pleasure of meeting the most delightful lady, CharMaine Beleele.

This lady caught my eye immediately. She sat in the front row and smiled throughout all of Sandy's program. She was full of enthusiasm! What I loved most about her was the fact that she was dressed like a 1940s reporter!

Well, after the show, Paula and I started chatting with her and discovered that she is not only a very talented photographer from Arkansas but actually IS a REPORTER!!!! She writes columns for the Internationally known photography magazine, RANGEFINDER. CharMaine travels the country covering seminars and conventions such as WPPI (Wedding & Portrait Photographers International). CharMaine is even a Super Monday instructor too

Cuando mi amiga Paula y yo fuimos al programa de Sandy Puc’ el sábado pasado, tuvimos el gusto de conocer a una señora muy amable y cariñosa, CharMaine Beleele.

Her passion for photography and love of teaching is very contagious......she not only encouraged me to be a better photographer, but a better person too! New Camera Room: Mini-Me

This is my "Mini-Me", Sophie Leal! She's a little bit "girlie-girl" and a little bit "tom-boyish", but is DEFINITELY a character! Since I missed her dance pictures this year, I thought it would be fitting that she be one of the FIRST people to try out my new camera room!

My recent experience at PPO School inspired me to move out of the master bedroom and play with lights! The space is very limited so I am using a two light sytem right now with my Compact Profoto 600s, but hope to invest in two more lights this fall. I can't beleive how fun and easy my set-up really is! The secret is to have control of exposure and color management.

After the session, I almost felt a bit confused and dismayed because I didn't find myself trying to correct the colors in Adobe Photoshop. I just downloaded the photographs, made some slight adjustments in Camera Raw, and BAM!!...I was done! I LOVE LOVE LOVE my CBL!!!!!

¡Esta es mi niñita, Sophie Leal! ¡Ella se porta poco como niña y un poco como niño, pero es DEFINITIVAMENTE una carácter! ¡Pues, como no podimos ir a su cita de fotos con su escuela de baile este año, yo pensé que estaría apropiado que ella será una de las PRIMERAS personas de probar mi nuevo cuarto de cámara!

¡Mi experiencia con la escuela de PPO, me inspiró a mudarme de la recámara grande en mi casa para jugar con mis luces! El espacio es muy limitado y estoy usando nada más dos luces, mis Compact Profoto 600. Óhala que puedo invertir en dos más luces este otoño próximo. ¡No puedo creer que es tan fácil y divertido usar mi arreglo de luces! El secreto es de tener control de la exposición y el color.

Después de la sesión, yo casi me sinté un poca confudida y consternaciónada porque yo no tuve que tratar de corregir los colores en Adobe Photoshop. ¡Nada más puse los fotos en la computadora, hice algunos pocos ajustes en Photoshop, y CARAMBA! !...Se acabó! ¡ADORO mi CBL! !!!!

Dr. Phil: Purosol Plasma

I was watching the Dr. Phil show today and they were interviewing a lady named Jennifer, who suffers from germaphobia. This woman washes her hands at least 30 times a day and constantly cleans her house in a compulsive sort of way. I was sitting here doing my Photoshop work on my laptop as I watched the show and chuckled occasionally at her addictions. But then, when they started discussing how dirty every-day household items are…………….such as COMPUTER KEYBOARDS…….my chuckles quickly dissipated.

My ears quickly perked up as I listened to the comments being made about how filthy items like telephones, doorbells, and keyboards really are. So, I looked at my screen and then inspected my keyboard and decided that it is probably a good time to clean it.

I pulled out a cleaner that I picked up at WPPI last spring and started to clean my screen and keyboard. I really like this spray. It is called Purosol Plasma. The reason that I really like this cleaner is because it seems to clean better than other sprays that I’ve used before. It seems to be able to really tackle the grease, grime, and dirt that forms on my screen. Living in small town America also means constant dusting in my home. After using the spray a couple of times, I noticed that I didn’t seem to have to clean my pc monitor as often as I did before. Purosal is an enzyme-based cleaner that doesn’t contain harmful chemicals that can damage my computers and televisions. It is solvent free, natural and safe to use, and is environmentally friendly.

I heard from a friend of mine that they are using this stuff at NASA! Very cool! Hoy estaba mirando el programa de televisión de Dr. Phil y estaba entrevisando a una mujer llamada Jennifer que padece de fobia a los germens. Esta mujer se lava las manos a lo menos 30 veces al día y constantemente limpia su casa de manera compulsiva. Estaba yo aquí sentada haciendo mi trabajo de Photoshop en mi computadora mientras miraba yo el programa y ocasionalmente me reía de sus adicciones. Pero luego, cuando empezaron a descutir lo sucio que son los articulos de la casa que se usan diariamente……….tal como el teclado de una computadora……mi risa pronto se disipó.

Se me alebrecaron los oídos mientras escuchaba los comentarios sobre lo sucio que son tales articulos como los teléfonos, los timbres de entrada, y los teclados. Miré a mi pantalla y inspecté mi taclado y decide que probablemente era justo tiempo para limpiarlo.

Saqué mi limpiador que conseguí en WPPI la primavera pasada y empezé a limpiar la pantalla y teclado. Me gusta mucho este limpiador. Se llama Purosol Plasma. La razón por la que me gusta tanto este limpiador es porque parece que limpia major que otros limpiadores que he usado. Parece que realmente ataca la grasa, el cochambre, y el polvo que se junta en la pantalla. La vida en un pueblo chico require constante limpieza. Después de usar el limpiador varias veces, noté que no tenía que limpiar la pantalla de mi computadora tan frequentemente. Puresol es un limpiador con base natural y no contiene quimicas peligrosas que puedan dañar mis computadoras y televisores. Es natural y inocuo y no daña el ambiente.

Me platicó un amigo que esto lo usan en NASA. ¡Que SUAVE! De cual que manera, busquenlo con su comerciante de cámara o en su próxima convención de fotofrafía o pueden mandarle un correo electronico a Stuart de Midwest Photo Exchange y el se los puede conseguir. Saving TIME: CBL

Since I came back from PPO School, I can’t tell you how much easier my post-production work-flow has gotten!!!! This little device has sure saved me a lot of time with color-balancing on my computer and has given that time back to me to spend with my KIDDOS!

This is the CBL (Color Balance Lens). I first picked this up at WPPI (Wedding & Portrait Photographers International)in Las Vegas last spring, but I wasn’t quite sure how to use it when I got home.

The instructors at PPO School demonstrated this little gadget and showed us how to use it effectively. It’s so SIMPLE to use! You can use it as a custom white balance before your session or you can use it as a color reference in Camera Raw in Adobe Photoshop. The cool thing about the CBL is that the backside is gray so that it can be used as an exposure reference as well.



This is how I use the CBL as a custom white balance with my Canon 5D:
1. I first set the AF-WB on my camera to the CUSTOM setting.
2. I take a picture of the CBL (I can leave it on auto-focus too).
3. I press the MENU button on my camera and set it to CUSTOM WB.
4. I select the image of the CBL photograph that I just took.
5. Then, I press SET on my camera.
6. THAT’S IT!!!! I have just saved hours worth of post-production work in Adobe Photoshop!

No les puedo acabar de decir que mucho más fácil se me ha hecho el trabajo después de la produción. Este pequeño aparato me ha ahorrado mucho tiempo con el balance de color en mi computadora y me ha devuelto el tiempo para invertirlo en mis hijos.

Esto es el CBL ( Color Balance Lens). Lo conseguí en WPPI (Wedding & Portrait Photographers International) en Las Vegas esta primavera que pasó, pero al llegar a casa, no estuve segura como usarlo.

Los instructores en la escuela PPO demonstraron este aparatito y nos mostraron como usarlo efectivamente. ¡Es tan fácil usarlo! Se puede usar como un balance blanco personal antes de una sesión o como una referencia de color en Camera Raw en Adobe Photoshop. Lo suave del CBL es que el lado de atrás es gris y también se puede usar como referencia de exposición.

Así es como uso el CBL como balance blanco personal con mi Canon 5D:
1. Primero pongo el AF-WB de mi camara a la posición Personal.
2. Tomo la foto del CBL. (También puedo dejar mi cámara en enfoque automático).
3. Oprimo el botón del menú de mi camara y lo pongo en Balance Blanco Personal.
4. Selecciono la imagen del CBL que acabo de tomar.
5. Luego oprimo SET en mi cámara.
6. ¡Es todo! Me acabo de ahorrar muchas horas de trabajo después de la producción en Adobe Photoshop.

PPO School: John Woodward

One of the Best lighting instructors in the country is John Woodward. We had the honor of having him teach at our professional photography school in Oklahoma this year as well. His class is extremely hands on and covers everything from composition, studio lighting, facial analyses of clients, outdoor photography and exposure, color management,etc. ...This is DEFINITELY the class to take to become a COMPLETE PHOTOGRAPHER!

In his class, John taught us three different portrait lighting forms....Classic Portrait, Glamour, and Modified Glamour. He explained the techniques so that everyone could understand and apply them to their own businesses!
Here is an example of what we did. The challenge was to analyze our model's face, set the lights appropriately based on her open and closed side of her face using one of the three lighting forms, and then capture the desired expression.

Probably, one of the best tips I got from this part of the lesson was to eliminate variables. I learned how to not recreate the wheel every time I have a studio session by using methods and equipment that are fail-proof.

Another thing that i am SOOOOOOOOOOOOO excited about was that John taught us how to use our meters!!!! I own the Sekonic L-758 DR. This is the one that John uses and recommends. I ABSOLUTELY love this meter because it is an incident and a reflective one too. The reflective part of it is EXTREMELY cool because it uses a spot meter to measure the light! The meter takes averages for me so that I am not trying to fumble around with numbers in my head in front of clients anymore!!!! MY life has gotten so much easier!!!! If that wasn't enough to make you want to go out and buy it.............the 758 also has a built in pocket wizard so that it triggers with my studio lights and my off camera flash too!!! I can't believe that I used to have my clients hold the meter in front of their face towards the light so that i could push the trigger on my camera!

Uno de los Mejores instructors de la iluminación en el país es John Woodward. También tuvimos el honor de tenerlo en nuestra escuela profesional de fotografía en Oklahoma este año. Su clase es muy práctica y cubre todo desde composición, iluminación de estudio, análisis de rostros, la fotografía y la exposición al aire libre, manejo del color, etc. ¡…..Esta es DEFINITIVAMENTE la clase que hay que tomar para ser un FOTÓGRAFO COMPLETO!

En su clase, John nos enseñó tres formas diferentes de la iluminación: Retrato classico, el Atractivo, y el Atractivo modificado. ¡ Explicó las técnicas para que todos pudieran comprenderlas y las pudierían aplicar en sus propios negocios! Aquí está un ejemplo de lo que hicimos. El desafío fue de analizar el rostro de nuestra modelo, poner las luces apropiadamente basado en el lado abierto y cerrado de su rostro utilizando una de las tres formas de iluminacón, y entonces captar la expresión deseada.

Probablemente, uno de los mejores consejos que recibí de esta parte de la lección fue de eliminar los variables. Aprendí a no recrear las cosas cada vez que tengo una cita de estudio utilizando métodos y equipo que no fallan.

¡Otra cosa que me emocionó mucho fue cuando John nos enseñó a utilizar nuestros metros! !!! Tengo el Sekonic L-758 DR. Este es el que John utiliza y recomienda. ABSOLUTAMENTE adoro este metro porque es incidente y reflector tambien. ¡La parte reflector es MUY suave porque utiliza un "spot meter" para medir la luz! ¡El metro toma los promedios y así no me preocupo con hacer cuentas mentalmente mientras que trabajo con mi cliente!!! ¡Cómo ha simplifado mi vida !!! ¡Si eso no fuese suficiente cómo para querer salir a comprarlo. ............el 758 también tiene dentro un transmisor “Pocket Wizard” que trabaja con mis luces de estudio y mi "off camera flash"!!! ¡No acabo devcreer que les tenía yo a mis clientes que sostenieran el metro frenter sus rostros y hacía la luz mientras yo imprimía el gatillo de mi cámara!

One of the BEST little professional photography schools in the country is in Oklahoma! PPO school is held in the month of June and is in Shawnee, Oklahoma. The school brings instructors from all over the country to teach different techniques. The tuition is very affordable and you will DEFINITELY get your monies worth!! As a trustee for the school, I had the discreet privelege of peeking into different classes and observing what different instructors were teaching.

This year we had the honor of having Hanson Fong, one of the premier wedding photographers in the United States teach at our school. He is internationally known and is sought after all over the country. Hanson's program is called, "Mastering the Technique" and he teaches photographers how to pose people using body shapes and sizes to create beautiful group portraits. At one point during the week, he posed 25 people with one posing stool and a set of his EZ steps!!!!
He also teaches how to pose brides and grooms with very simple and applicable techniques. He is well-known for using his "flow-posing" technique. Guess who got recruited to be the bride?

Hanson also covered workflow, lighting, business tips, and gave sooo much valuable information that everyone was always attentive to what he had to say. The really cool thing about Oklahoma photography school is that the classes are generally smaller so the setting is more intimate, everyone is quite comfortable, and the instructors can usually spend more hands-on time with the class.

¡Una de las MEJORES escuelas de fotografía profesional en el país es una pequeña escuela en Oklahoma! La escuela de PPO se lleva acabo en el mes de junio y está ubicada en Shawnee, Oklahoma. La escuela consigue instructores de todos lados del país para dar clases sobre distinta técnica. ¡Las clases son muy económicas y muy bien valen el costo!! Este año tuvimos el honor de tener como instructor a Hanson Fong, uno de los principales fotógrafos de bodas en los Estados Unidos. Es conocido internacionalmente y solicitado por todo el país. Su programa se titula "Dominando la técnica" y muestra a fotógrafos cómo posar al cliente usando su forma y tamaño del cuerpo para crear bellos retratos en grupo. ¡A cierto punto durante la semana, Hanson posó a 25 personas usando solamente un banco y un conjunto de sus EZ Steps! !!! Hanson también enseña cómo posar a novios con técnicas muy sencillas y aplicables. Es bastante conocido por su uso de la técnica de pose fluido. ¿Adivina quién fue recluida para hacerla de la novia?

Hanson también habló sobre el volumen del trabajo, la iluminación, dió consejos de negocio, y tanta información valiosa que todos estuvieron siempre atentos a lo que decía. Lo mas suave de la escuela de fotografía de Oklahoma, es que las clases son generalmente más chicas y la atmósfera es más íntima, todos se la pasan bastante cómodos, y los instructores generalmente pueden pasar más tiempo práctico con los estudiantes. ¡Hanson también tiene unos productos fantasticos! I'm BACK!!! ¡Estoy De Vuelta!

WOW! I can't beleive that it's been almost a year since I last blogged! I have learned so much since then and have attended some of the most amazing schools, conventions, and seminars all over the United States. Originally when I first started my website last year, I wanted to use my blog as a means to share myself and my clients with all of you. But now, I want to add to that vision and also share photography information and techniques with my photobuddies!!!.....I guess that is the passion of a teacher.......live to learn and share knowledge! So stay tuned!.....I'll tell you about some cool things that I learned at Professional Photography Schools of Oklahoma this last June.

¡Caramba! ¡No puedo creer que hace casi un año que no escribo en mi pagina del internet (blog)! He aprendido tanto desde entonces y también he asistido a unas escuelas, convenciónes, y seminarios tan fantásticos aquí en los Estados Unidos. Cuando empezé mi website el año pasado, quería usar mi pagina del internet para compartirme yo y ha mis clientes con ustedes. Pero, ahora también quiero compartir información y técnicas de la fotografía con mis amigos fotógrafos.......supongo que eso es la pasión de una maestra............vivir para aprender y compartir conocimientos. ¡Pues, así es de que estén al tanto .....les platicaré de unas cosas tan suaves que aprendí en la escuela profesiónal de fotografía de Oklahoma este junio pasado.
